ALICE THEOBALD is an artist working across a range of media including live performance, video, installation, sound/music, text and sculpture to explore the divisions between stage and life and the discrepancies between expression, appearance and feeling. Often conflating sentimental tropes and social archetypes with absurdist and dead-pan humour, Theobald addresses accepted concepts of spectacle and emotion and uses performance as both starting point and subject matter to magnify aspects of everyday life and typically introspective thought. Borrowing from the vocabulary of cinema, television, theatre, literature and soundtracks, her practice is concerned with the desire for authenticity and commodification of emotion and what this might say about empathy, aspiration and how we (mis)communicate. Theobald frequently collaborates and works with a cast of non-professional actors and performers whilst taking on many functional roles such as director, scenographer, camera operator, composer, musician, narrator and performer. Fluctuating between script and improvisation, her work highlights the unstable relationship between art, communication and representation by referencing the hybrid nature of their construction through repetition and playing with the metaphorical potential of language, image, sound and action.
She also co-founded the music group/ artist-collective Ravioli Me Away in 2013 in London with Sian Dorrer and Rosie Ridgeway. They have since produced an Opera, toured internationally, released 4 albums and much more...

Born in Leicester UK (1985) and lives in Birmingham UK and is currently The Wheatley Fellow at School of Art, Birmingham City University and Eastside Projects.
She recived a Postgraduate Diploma with The Gold Medal Award from The Royal Academy Schools London in 2014 and her BA in Fine Art and Contemprary Critical Theory at Goldsmiths, University of London in 2007.
